![]() ![]() They are thrown together when Eleanor moves back in with her mother and stepfather, and faces naked hostility as she boards the schoolbus for the first time. ![]() I was there, and got a copy of the novel, and have read nothing since, and now that I've finished it, I find myself profoundly moved.Įleanor & Park is told as a series of very short vignettes alternating the points of view of Eleanor, a fat, redheaded, awkward teenaged girl who lives with four siblings and an abusive, alcoholic, snake-mean stepfather and Park, a biracial Korean-American kid who uses his love of alternative music and comics to shut out the taunting bullies in his school. ![]() Last week, the National Coalition Against Censorship honored Rainbow Rowell for her refusal to be back down on the frequent challenges to her multiple-award-winning, bestselling 2013 novel Eleanor & Park. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sitting down with SFX magazine back in August, Bruckner shared some tight-lipped updates on what we can expect from the forthcoming film. However, it’s quasi-newcomer Brucker who I’m personally the most excited about taking over the reins of Hell. This is the same dude who wrote both Blade and The Dark Knight. The new film in the Clive Barker legacy series will also be written by Hollywood hotshot David S. Anyone who has seen The Night House will have a sense of why Bruckner is perfectly suited to bring Hellraiser back to its dark and artful roots. Starting with the chilling Netflix moment The Ritual, David Bruckner’s latest release The Night House is also superb. ![]() ![]() First things first let’s talk about the director because this dude has curated one hell of a resume for himself over the past few years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some births were complicated while others were straightforward, some joyous and others tragic. I really enjoyed The Midwife of Hope River and found the accounts of the births fascinating. Many cannot afford to pay Patience for her services, but she doesn’t turn any of them away. Set in 1929/30, just after the Wall St crash and the ensuing Depression, Patience struggles through poverty as she helps the women around her deliver their babies. Soon the two women form a bond and a strong relationship. She teaches young Bitsy about midwifery while Bitsy teaches Patience about gardening, hunting and fishing. ![]() ![]() Mrs Kelly was Patience’s only friend for a long time and so Patience puts up Bitsy Proudfoot when her employer can no longer afford to keep her on. Nobody knows about her past and Patience, wanting to keep her old alias buried, doesn’t allow herself to become close to anybody and lives in constant fear that she will be found out. Her mentor and best friend, Mrs Kelly, has died and now Patience is alone, working as a midwife in Liberty, a small town in West Virginia, and the surrounding area. Originally named Elizabeth Snyder, Patience has changed her name and hidden her past to protect herself. Though only in her mid thirties, Patience Murphy has endured enough drama to span several lifetimes. ![]() This post was originally published at and is now at. ![]() ![]() “This was the kind of thing Oswald Mosley and his British Fascists wanted – a country in which the rule of law was replaced by bullying and beating. “Carla could not understand why they got so angry about Jews, who seemed the same as everyone else apart from their religion.” If we don’t do that, we fail in our patriotic duty.” “It’s our responsibility to make politics less rough – more honest, more rational, less violent. “Isn’t it better for the press to be able to criticize everyone equally?” ![]() I also admire the passionate love that exists in its different shapes along with the most cruel and violent moments in human history. In fact I think that they’re one of the book’s strongest aspects – I’ll never forget LLoyd Williams. ![]() I really adore the way Follett combine real historical events with his impressible and powerful characters. The book is just amazing – I liked it more than Fall of Giants. ![]() ![]() ![]() When Rosie learns that her bookstore’s lease has been terminated by Jane’s family’s business, romance moves to the back burner. This is just a taste of the weirdness that awaits you in Mike Norton's Battlepug. The child grows into a warrior and, as all warriors need a noble steed, it is not long before he discovers the brave animal who will carry him into battle: a giant, wheezing, perpetually happy pug. Battlepug has proven my suspicions correct as it is a giant baby seal that merrily lays waste to an entire Arctic village, leaving only one survivor: a child hellbent on revenge against this monstrous beast. Those big black eyes are pools of pure evil. I have always suspected that baby harp seals were capable of a vicious brutality that certainly merited clubbing. ![]() ![]() The girl said, “Pretty DOES matter!
